During my recent California getaway, I carved out time for something truly special—a day trip to Catalina Island, specifically the charming town of Avalon.

This island has long been known as a peaceful retreat from the mainland’s hustle and bustle, and let me tell you—it absolutely lives up to the hype. Just an hour’s ferry ride from the California coast, it felt like I stepped into a completely different world.

The moment I decided to visit Catalina Island, I imagined sunshine, ocean breezes, and slow, soul-refreshing moments—and that’s exactly what I experienced.

But it wasn’t just the scenery that made this trip so unforgettable. It was the combination of small-town charm, friendly people, and stunning coastal views that truly made my visit magical.

Catalina Express from Long Beach

My adventure started early in the morning when I boarded the Catalina Express ferry from Long Beach. The ferry ride takes about an hour and offers beautiful views of the ocean.

If you’re lucky, you might even spot dolphins or whales along the way—it’s a magical bonus that can turn an ordinary boat ride into something unforgettable.

That said, I want to give you a few real-life tips before you go. The ferry’s upper deck is not fully covered, and depending on the time of year, you might face cold winds and even ocean spray.

It can get very chilly, especially without the proper attire, so I recommend dressing in layers or bringing a warm jacket.

Also, the ferry can fill up fast. If you’re traveling with others and want to sit together, try to get in line at least 30 minutes to an hour early. It makes the boarding process smoother and gives you the best chance to grab good seats.

Exploring Avalon the Heart of Catalina Island

When we docked, I stepped into the postcard-perfect town of Avalon, the heart and soul of Catalina Island. Everything is walkable, and there’s a calm, relaxed energy that instantly makes you want to slow down and savor the moment.

There are shops, restaurants, and cozy cafes lining the main strip—each with its own personality. I strolled through the area, popped into a few local shops, and soaked in the sun-drenched views.

You’ll see people walking, biking, and even cruising around in golf carts, which are a popular mode of transportation on the island. Cars are restricted, which adds to the island’s peaceful, small-town feel.

The Historic Catalina Casino

One of the highlights of my visit was walking over to the Catalina Casino. Now, don’t let the name fool you—it’s not a gambling casino.

Instead, it’s a beautiful and historic building that’s served as a ballroom, theater, and gathering place for decades. Built in 1929, it stands as a symbol of Catalina Island’s golden age and offers amazing photo opportunities.

Even if you don’t go inside, the walk to the Casino is breathtaking. You’ll pass scenic coastal views and charming architecture that make the journey just as enjoyable as the destination.

A Delicious Lunch at Luau Larry’s

All that walking worked up an appetite, so I stopped at Luau Larry’s, a laid-back spot with tropical vibes perfect for lunch.

The coconut shrimp was delicious—crispy and full of flavor—and my drink of choice was the Paradise Pina Colada. It hit the spot and added a bit of vacation magic to the meal. The menu also had great options for kids and non-drinkers, so it’s a family-friendly stop worth checking out.

Things to Do & Know

If you plan ahead, there are lots of activities available in Avalon—kayaking, snorkeling, zip-lining, and glass-bottom boat tours, just to name a few. But even if you’re like me and just want to walk, shop, and eat, you’ll still have an amazing time.

Here are a few quick tips:

  • Book your Catalina Express tickets early (both to and from the island).
  • Bring a jacket or sweater, even if the forecast looks warm.
  • Charge your phone or camera—you’ll want to take lots of photos.
  • Consider renting a golf cart if you want to explore beyond walking distance.

Planning Your Trip to Catalina Island

If you’re thinking about making the trip, a few more tips might help. There are lockers available for rent in Avalon if you don’t want to carry your things around all day.

Public restrooms are also well-kept and conveniently located throughout town. The walk from the ferry dock to most of the shops and restaurants is very manageable, even for families with little ones or older visitors.

For those staying overnight or longer, there are plenty of hotels and vacation rentals to choose from, each offering different views and experiences. But even if, like me, you only have a day to spend, Catalina Island makes a lasting impression.

Whether you’re watching the waves crash against the rocks or wandering the quaint streets of Avalon, it’s the kind of place that stays with you long after you’ve left.

Waterfront Vibes & Local Vendors

One of my favorite scenes from Catalina Island was right along the waterfront in Avalon.

It’s such a unique experience to walk down a street where, on one side, you have charming shops and restaurants, and on the other, you see people sunbathing on the sand or lounging on boats that have come up close to shore.

It’s a beautiful blend of small-town life and laid-back coastal energy.

The beach area is directly across from the main road and walking path, so everything feels connected—you’re never far from a refreshing drink, a souvenir shop, or a perfect ocean view.

It’s easy to spend hours there, just people-watching, breathing in the salty air, and feeling the calm that Avalon offers.

During my visit, local vendors set up small booths right along the street. Since it was close to Mother’s Day, there were adorable handmade gifts, jewelry, and festive items available.

I love that Catalina Island supports small vendors and seasonal street setups—it adds to the personality of the place and gives you a chance to pick up something truly one-of-a-kind.

It’s these little moments—the sunbathers, the boats, the holiday vendors—that make Avalon feel alive, personal, and worth returning to.

A Little History Behind Catalina Island

Catalina Island has a rich history. It was originally inhabited by the Tongva people and has gone through many transformations—from Spanish explorers to chewing gum businessman William Wrigley Jr., who helped shape the island into the tourist destination it is today.

Avalon remains the only incorporated city on the island and continues to preserve its small-town charm while welcoming visitors from all over the world.

Final Thoughts

If you’re planning a trip to Southern California, I highly recommend setting aside a day for Catalina Island. The ferry ride alone offers an adventure, and Avalon’s charm, food, history, and scenic views make it an experience you’ll never forget.

My beautiful day in Avalon, surrounded by the sights, sounds, and flavors of Catalina Island, is something I’ll always cherish. Whether you’re going solo, with friends, or with family, this is a destination that delivers lasting memories and invites you to return again and again.

Pack your sunglasses, prep your camera, and get ready for a getaway that feels both peaceful and full of possibility. Catalina Island is waiting—and it’s just a ferry ride away.
