Are you sitting at work thinking about ways to make money working from home?  You are definitely not the only one.  I used to dread going into my job.

I would often dream about building my own business and that’s exactly what I did. It took me a long time of trial and error and much learning. It is difficult to take the first leap and that’s why I include in my blog 9 Steps to Make Before Starting a Small Business and How to Start a Blog Using SiteGround.

There are hundreds of legitimate jobs allowing you to work from the comfort of your home.  I will not lie and say I’ve tried them all.  In fact, I’ve been turned down from a few because I don’t have the background experience and my expertise is elsewhere.

So, when you hear people say to run out and get a customer service job online please understand this does not work for everyone

You Can’t Listen to Everyone Else

People can easily get their hopes up about trying something they’ve read, yet when it doesn’t happen, it can cause a person to feel down about themselves.  So, before rushing out and taking a leap make sure you don’t leave a job prematurely, understand that blogging and starting a business is hard work.

I was not a social guru before starting Navigate with Price and I’m still lacking the Likes and know how on Facebook and other social platforms.  But, depending on the work from home job or business you begin you may not need all the hoopla that everyone talks about.

In my journey of working from home since my daughter’s surgery, I started a blog I revamped because I began to narrow my niche. I tried and retried tactics on social platforms; I tried to offer free giveaways, and I’ve gone through tons of webinars.

A few things that have worked for me are Tailwind for Pinterest and enhancing my writing skills.  However, I still work on different ideas and areas of my business every day and every day I feel more confident in my endeavors.

My Thoughts About Work from Home Jobs

I knew that working from home would be the best fit for my family, but I couldn’t quite figure out how to stay at home and make money.  Hearing over and over again that there are ways to make money with the internet encouraged me, but where did I fit into it all.

There is some excitement that comes with the idea of working from home or from a laptop. It might even seem adventurous or magical, but finding our individual path is what’s important. My best advice is to determine what you are good at doing.  For instance, think about what has driven you in the past and what do you go back to time and time again?

I felt confused and a little lost because I have lived a life of advocating for my children, encouraging others, and working in administration, finance, and business to support my family.  I just didn’t know what the right direction was for me.

I’m not exactly sure when the moment happened, but I realized I wanted to help others like me to be successful in their business ventures so others could achieve a work-life balance we all strive for.  Hence, Navigate with Price had its meaning!

Work from Home Jobs You Build Yourself

The internet has encouraged online learning and education. Individuals and companies are constantly looking for distance learning and professional development.

There are hundreds of ideas on the internet that allow you to work from home.  The plan is to find your niche and build on something you love and want to do over and over again.

Become a Virtual Assistant

If you are as old as I am you didn’t grow up with computers or any form of virtual assistance.  The workforce had secretaries who typed and used shorthand to take notes.  In 2017 it was estimated that 1 billion users would be using some form of digital virtual assistance.

According to an article I recently read on Townsquare.com, Small Business in the US by the Numbers by Ahmed El-Najjar, he showed statistics indicating there were 28 million small businesses in the United States in 2017.

Technology and small business owners are on the rise which means that virtual assistants are also on the rise.  As a virtual assistant you can work independently or for other companies.

Working independently gives you the flexibility as an individual business owner or contractor, but you need to find the work yourself.  Applying for jobs allows you to work as an employee for someone else.

Indeed, Simply Hired, Upwork, and other platforms help you find virtual assistant jobs.

Some tasks that may be requested from a virtual assistant are:

  • Answering Phone Calls
  • Making Phone Calls
  • Internet Research
  • Scheduling Appointments
  • Providing Email Correspondence
  • Travel Arrangements
  • Social Media Management
  • Event Planning
  • And More Dependent Upon the Position

Create Products to Sell

If you are artistic, can work a press machine, embroider, crochet, make jewelry, then why not sell your items.  The internet makes it easy to sell items for extra cash.

This type of work may not supplement your income immediately, but you’d be surprised at how many people make a decent living off of their creations.

Find the right selling locations and platforms that fit your niche.  Before getting started do your research and homework.

Places to sell your homemade items are:

  • Alibaba
  • Craft Fairs
  • eBay
  • Etsy
  • Farmer’s Markets
  • Local Marketplaces
  • Local Niche Shops
  • Teespring

Start a Blog

I originally started blogging as an outlet.  Reading other blogs allowed me to believe that I could create a blog too.  After doing research I decided to go with SiteGround and WordPress for my blog.

In the beginning I was all over the place with my blog because I had much to say about a lot of topics.  However, when I decided I wanted to try to work from home, I began marketing my bookkeeping services and I narrowed my niche.

A blog is just like any other small business, you need to decide what you want to discuss with your audience.  Unfortunately, like anything else your audience needs to want to go to you for services, products, or information.

I am a military wife, a mother of an Autistic daughter, and a mother of two daughters with scoliosis.  Although I can create a blog about our lives and struggles, I decided to focus on helping others start businesses, helping business owners by giving them more time to manage their business while I take care of their bookkeeping, and provide information based on know-how and experience.

Blogging has allowed me to share my experiences and knowledge in business, bookkeeping, and various other topics.  I use affiliates to help me to pay for my blog because we all know nothing is free.

There are many parents, like myself, who have a hard time balancing work and home, I enjoy helping others create a lifestyle to fit their needs.

Start an E-Commerce Drop Shipping Store

There are numerous platforms that allow you to drop ship items.  You don’t have to invest thousands or even hundreds of dollars to drop ship and make money.

Drop shipping is another business where you have to first determine what type of products you want to sell.  Start by doing research on specific trends and industries.  Starting your own business requires thought and execution.

My experience and knowledge about E-Commerce Drop Shipping is available for anyone serious about starting an e-commerce drop shipping store.

My husband and I use Shopify for our e-commerce store.  The benefit of using Shopify is the ability to sell your products on Facebook, Pinterest, Instagram, and more.  Shopify also includes applications to work with multiple suppliers.

Benefits of a Drop Ship Store:

  • Less Capital Required Up Front
  • Warehouse Not Needed
  • No Packing or Shipping
  • Inventory Tracking Unnecessary
  • No Rent for Space
  • Work from Anywhere
  • Wide Variety of Suppliers

Disadvantages of a Drop Ship Store:

  • Competitive Pricing
  • Supplier Stocking Issues
  • Shipping Charges Vary by Supplier Locations
  • You Still Deal with the Customer When Suppliers Make Errors

Start a Bookkeeping Business

I’m obviously a little biased when it comes to starting a bookkeeping business because this is my primary profession aside from blogging.  Working for more than 26 years and having a bachelor’s degree in accounting allowed me to jump into this work from home job.

Just like a virtual assistant, bookkeeping and accounting services are on the rise due to the increase in small businesses in the United States.

Not all small businesses consist of numerous employees.  In fact, many small businesses are sole proprietors and Limited Liability Companies.  Entrepreneurs and business owners need bookkeeping and accounting help.

Not all of them realize it yet and not all of them want to spend their hard earned money paying for bookkeeping, but once a business increases in revenue and production of goods or services they become increasingly aware of how important bookkeeping is.

Why Business Owners Need Bookkeepers?

Business owners use their income taxes and financial reports to show income to creditors, investors, banks, etc.  Having a bookkeeper helps business owners buy homes, vehicles, small business loans, and so much more.

As a bookkeeper you are not only assisting people and businesses, you are aiding them in achieving goals in their lives.  For you as a bookkeeper, you receive the reward of knowing that you were a part of their growth.

Interested in becoming a bookkeeper?  I talk about the steps I took to Start a Bookkeeping Business here.
